Up to Data Recovery F.A.Q.

Can I recover my data using Norton or other disk utilities?

While most disk utilities provide excellent preventative maintenance by fixing minor problems, they can render data unrecoverable in the event of extreme corruption. Follow these tips to help ensure your drive and data safety:

Save an "undo" file (a record of the changes the utility has made to your drive), in the event it does not correct your problem. By sending this file along with your drive to us, you help ensure recovery of your data.

DO NOT use a utility program if it does not allow you to save an "undo" file of the repairs it makes. If your drive makes any unusual noises, DO NOT attempt to use any type of utility software.Damaging sounds include clicking, buzzing or scraping. Unusual sounds are indicative of a damaged head mechanism or a head crash. Shut down the computer to avoid further damage to the drive and its data. Send your drive to us for professional recovery.

Drive is NOT visible in BIOS. The first problem was that the drive failed to boot with a message that the NTLR was missing (or something like that). I then bought a new drive and installed a new OS on that drive (hoping to read this drive as a slave). I do not believe that any data has been written to the old drive since the drive's initial failure to boot. But now when I start the PC, whether I use a cable select or master/slave configuration for the two drives (old/failed and new), the BIOS reports a hard drive failure on this old drive, and the OS does not see the drive at all. The new drive works fine, suggesting that the problem is definitely with the drive, not the PC or controller.

After recovery:

Thank you, David M.

Hard drive started to click and wouldn't boot but Bios could read it. Started recovery with Winternal's Disk Commander then drive died. Bios now won't detect it nor will Winternals.

After recovery:

Thanks a lot for data recovery.
Sincerely,
Michael R.
